Acknowledging use of information from GEOFON

  • Earthquake information: the earthquake service is a joint effort of all GEVN partner networks. Please give proper credit! For example:
Locations were obtained from the GEOFON programme of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences using data from the GEVN partner networks.
  • Waveform data: data sets should generally be acknowledged or cited individually. See below for additional information on DOIs for seismic data sets. To acknowledge use of data from the data centre, you may use a text like
Seismic data were obtained from the GEOFON data centre of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
To acknowlege use of the GEOFON seismic network (FDSN network code GE) data, please use the appropriate DOI, doi:10.14470/TR560404.
  • Software: terms of use vary, but an acknowlegement like "uses software obtained from the GEOFON data centre of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences" is appreciated.

Citing data sets obtained from GEOFON

Thank you for using the data we provide. Many organisations are involved in producing and preparing the data available from GEOFON.

Digital Object Indentifiers (DOIs). Some of the data sets provided here have DOIs associated with their seismic network, following the new (21 July 2014) "FDSN recommendations for seismic network DOIs and related FDSN services". Where this is the case, this is shown on the page for that network, which you can reach from our archive page. Please use the DOI indicated in your acknowledgements or citations as appropriate, if one is available. For example:

A. Author et al. (1980). Data report for the PQ network
deployment, Central Atlantis region, 1978-1979. doi:10.5880/geofon.srapto

This work included data from the XX, YY and ZZ seismic networks, obtained
from the GEOFON data centre.

For GE network data, you may use a citation text like

GEOFON Data Centre (1993): GEOFON Seismic Network. Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ.
   Other/Seismic Network. doi:10.14470/TR560404.

Not all seismic networks have a DOI available yet; the FDSN offers a helpful service to search for these.
