Citing data obtained from GEOFON

Acknowledging use of information from GEOFON

Thank you for caring about data citation! The best way to acknowledge use of data we provide depends on the type of data you have used:

  1. Earthquake information
  2. Waveform data: data sets should generally be acknowledged or cited individually. See below for using DOIs for seismic data sets.
To acknowlege use of the GEOFON seismic network (FDSN network code GE) data, use the DOI doi:10.14470/TR560404.
  3. Software

1. Earthquake parametric data

The earthquake service is a joint effort of all GEVN partner networks. Please give proper credit! You may cite the following reference:

Quinteros, J., Strollo, A., Evans, P. L., Hanka, W., Heinloo, A., Hemmleb, S., Hillmann, L., Jäckel, K.-H., Kind, R., Saul, J., Zieke, T., Tilmann, F. (2021): The GEOFON Program in 2020. Seismological Research Letters, 92(3), 1610–1622. doi:10.1785/0220200415
Alternatively, a text like the following may be appropriate:
Event locations were obtained from the GEOFON program of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences using data from the GEVN partner networks.
We do not yet make a citation style recomendation for specific earthquakes. Please mention "GEOFON data centre" and/or "GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences."

2. Citing seismic data sets obtained from GEOFON

Thank you for using the data we provide. Many organisations are involved in producing and preparing the data available from GEOFON.

To acknowledge use of data from the data centre, you may use a text like

Seismic data were obtained from the GEOFON data centre of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

Digital Object Indentifiers (DOIs). Most of the data sets provided here have DOIs associated with their seismic network, following the "FDSN recommendations for seismic network DOIs and related FDSN services" (July 2014) [doi:10.7914/D11596]. Where this is the case, this is shown on the page for that network, which you can reach from our archive page. Please cite all networks whose data you used equivalently to a paper citation, e.g., with author-year citation in the text or acknowledgements, and the full citation string in the reference list. For example "... we used data from the PQ network (A. Author, 1980) ...", and then include in your references:

A. Author et al. (1980). Data report for the PQ network deployment, Central Atlantis region, 1978-1979. doi:10.14470/geofon.srapto

For GE network data, you may use a citation text like

GEOFON Data Centre (1993): GEOFON Seismic Network. Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ. Other/Seismic Network. doi:10.14470/TR560404.

Not all seismic networks have a DOI available yet. For these, we would still appreciate an indication of the role of GEOFON:

This work included data from the XX, YY and ZZ seismic networks, obtained from the GEOFON data centre.

The FDSN offers a helpful service to search for these.

3. Software products

Terms of use vary, but an acknowledgement like "uses software obtained from the GEOFON data centre of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences" is appreciated. See the individual software pages.
